This has hobbled the grid, causing power outages of up to five hours at a time.
Even additional cross-border power supplies from Russia haven’t helped matters – as the new overhead lines quickly become “overloaded”.
The police have hit back at crypto miners. And, EA Daily Reportedly, this has borne fruit in recent times. Media outlets reported that on 5 and 6 February several raids were carried out by the State Security Service of Abkhazia.

The first raid took place at the Palace of Culture, Sukhumi. Formerly the MVO Military Sanatorium, this crumbling piece of Soviet-era architecture is home to several disused buildings – one of which was repurposed as a crypto mining farm. The authorities seized 25 rigs from this site.
The same day, authorities raided a concrete-producing center in the Gudauta area and a parking lot used for the sale of cars, where they found a total of 50 devices illegally connected to the grid.
And on 6 February, officials from the Ochamchira region teamed up with agents from the Ministry of Internal Affairs for a major operation. Officers raided a “private home” in the village of Achaguara, where they seized 115 devices.
Officials said the rigs used 250 kWh worth of electricity consumed from the public grid.
