In a press release, the GDDP said it is investigating ChatGPT after banning the wildly popular OpenAI chatbot.
Italy becomes first Western country to officially ban artificial intelligence chatbots chatgpt on privacy concerns. The European country is looking to launch an investigation regarding suspected breaches of its data privacy rules. This investigation will also determine whether the OpenAI chatbot complies with the General Data Protection Regulation.
On Friday, the Italian data-protection authority called for ChatGPT to be suspended following a March 20 platform breach. According to the Data Protection Authority (GDDP), the data of one user was exposed to another user through an AI chatbot.
Amid allegations that ChatGPT breached at least one user’s conversation and payment information, GDDP also raised another pressing issue. The Italian data watchdog pointed out that the information about the data compiled by OpenAI is insufficient. one in Press releaseSecurity Guard said:
“The privacy guarantor sees the lack of information to users and all interested parties whose data are collected by OpenAI, but above all, the absence of a legal basis that justifies the collection and mass storage of personal data, the algorithms underlying Operation of the platform to “train”.
Furthermore, the GDDP pointed out that the information provided by ChatGPT does not always reflect actual data. The agency concluded that the chatbot may have erred in processing personal data.
Italy ChatGPT ban comes as data watchdog chatbot lacks filter to verify user’s age
The GDDP also pointed out how ChatGPT may have violated its own data protection rules. The Italian data watchdog pointed out that although the chatbot has age limits, it lacks filters to verify a user’s age. This operational shortcoming means that people under the age-13 threshold may be exposed to age-inappropriate answers.
Following the ChatGPT ban in Italy, the GDDP stated that OpenAI had 20 days to address the concerns raised. According to watchman:
“OpenAI has appointed a representative in the European Economic Area, and must communicate within 20 days the measures taken in implementation of the measures requested by the guarantor, under penalties of up to 20 million euros or 4% of annual global turnover. “
The ban isn’t the first time Italy’s data watchdog has moved against AI chatbots. GDDP in February Banned Chatbot App Replica Citing risks to emotionally fragile people and minors, from accessing personal data.
Although ChatGPT claimed around 100 million users globally in its first two months, it is unclear how many users are in Italy. Even an hour after the ban was announced in Italy, some publications claimed that they were able to access the AI service from the country.
Despite its early success and explosive popularity, ChatGPT has also come under fire from other parts of the world. For example, the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Policy (CAIDP) filed a complaint against the chatbot today. CAIDP described ChatGPT as a “biased” and “misleading” platform that could compromise public privacy.
