Fans of The Walking Dead will soon have the chance to put their own spin on the hit franchise. The Sandbox just announced a VoxEdit contest, allowing fans to win prizes by creating voxel characters based on the comic book series. What do we know about The Sandbox’s upcoming contest?
What do we know about The Walking Dead contest?
The contest gives fans a challenge- create unique voxel characters that capture the essence of The Walking Dead. Fans can feature their favorite characters like Rick, Daryl, and Michonne. Alternatively, they can go off-script and feature the zombie apocalypse itself.
There is one major stipulation, however. Entries must focus on the comic book series and not the long-running AMC TV show. Additionally, the voxel characters must be fully animated. No static images will be considered.
Participants can use The Sandbox‘s voxel-editing software VoxEdit to craft their submissions. After finishing, they can then submit their entries by tweeting gifs of their assets mentioning @VoxEdit, @TheSandboxGame, and the #VoxEditWeekly hashtags.
What can people win in the contest?
Entrants can win more than just bragging rights. The competition features a prize pool of 15,000 SAND, worth $8,250 currently. The prizes will be split as follows:
- 1st place: 6,000 SAND
- 2nd place: 3,500 SAND
- 3rd place: 2,000 SAND
- 4th to 10th place: Each receives 500 SAND.
When are submissions due?
The contest dates are:
- Submissions open: May 1st.
- Submissions close: May 14th, at 11:59pm UTC
- Results announcement: June 3rd
How will submissions be judged?
The team will judge submissions based on 5 different criteria. Each category follows a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being “very poor” and 5 being “very good”.
- Creativity (How creative was the asset based on the theme?).
- Usability (How usable is this asset in other games?).
- Optimization (Does this asset look optimized in Sandbox Game?).
- Level of detail (The detailing on the asset).
- Quality of Animation (Were new animations added? How good are the animations?).
Any other important guidelines?
There are a couple more rules to follow:
- Entries must stay within the universe of The Walking Dead. No entries featuring intellectual property from other copyrighted material will be considered. Additionally, submissions must be consistent with The Walking Dead Universe (no sci-fi, fantasy, etc)
- Poor quality entries or stolen work will not be considered.
- Material must be family-friendly, so nothing inappropriate allowed.
- Participants must use The Sandbox’s free VoxEdit software to create their submissions
- Assets should not exceed more than 5000 faces or a max of 175 nodes
- The maximum size of an asset is 512 voxels tall and the floor print should not exceed 512 x 512 x 512
What is The Walking Dead?
The Walking Dead franchise started off with graphic novels created by Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore. The series subsequently ran for 193 issues from 2003 to 2019. It features a Kentucky deputy police officer, Rick Grimes, who awakens from a coma into a zombie apocalypse.
The series was a smash hit and was later developed into a TV series in 2010. The IP recently has also made its way into Web3 with the help of Gala Games. By partnering with The Sandbox for the voxel contest, The Walking Dead universe continues to find ways to entertain fans across different mediums.
