Alibaba Cloud, one of the major subsidiaries of the Chinese multinational tech giant Alibaba Group Holdings Limited (HKG: 9988), is reportedly ready to launch its own ChatGPT rival, which has become a major craze in today’s tech world. As informed of By Bloomberg, Alibaba Cloud is sending out invitation codes to some of its corporate customers to help them test new applications using the Large Language Model (LLM) which is the brains behind how ChatGPT works.
The tech giant’s new application is codenamed “Tongyi Qianwen,” which is specially adapted in part to the philosopher Mencius. The name translates as “Truth of a Thousand Questions” and aptly describes the role the new application will play in the Alibaba tech ecosystem.
With every tech company around now looking to launch their own conversational chatbot, this isn’t a coincidence as the battle for supremacy in search engines and digital advertising is reaching an entirely new level. The advent of ChatGPT by OpenAI saw over 100 million users in the first few months, leading to a change in the conversational approach to chat applications.
While it’s unclear how Alibaba hopes to use its own version of ChatGPT, the tech giant powers WeChat, the most visited application in China and the Asian continent, to the firm’s ecommerce marketplace.
With the test, Alibaba wants users to record and report their findings, but as seen, the chatbot can only work for Chinese users as the instructional language is in Mandarin. Further information on the timing of the proposed launch could be given when the CEO of Alibaba Cloud, Daniel Zhang, is set to deliver a speech at a technology summit that the company is set to host.
