Chinese giant Alibaba Group Holding Limited (NYSE:BABA) has released an improved version of Tongyi Qianwen – its AI model that acts as a ChatGPIT-like interface for all of its business apps across Alibaba’s ecosystem. Alibaba co-founder Joe Tsai where did it go,
“Our goal is to be the most open cloud in the age of AI. We hope that through this cloud [platform]Developing and using AI will become easy and affordable for everyone.”
Alibaba unveiled its Tongyi Qianwen in April. In September, the model became Available to the public. Developed by Alibaba DAMO Academy, Tongyi Qianwen Chat shares similarities in functionality with GPT. and can generate human-like responses to questions, serving as the basis for the generative AI experiences we are familiar with today. The developers refer to the models as ‘idea-generator’ and ‘efficiency assistant’. The model is built on Tongyi, an AI framework created by Alibaba, and trained on massive amounts of data to generate conversational, creative responses to user signals.
The updated version has “hundreds of billions” of parameters – a benchmark used to measure the power of AI models, making it one of the most powerful AI models in the world according to that metric.
Jingren Zhou, CTO of Alibaba Cloud, commented:
“Large language models have immense potential to revolutionize industries. We are committed to using cutting-edge technologies, including Generative AI, to help our customers drive growth. To help businesses better capture the benefits of generic AI in a cost-effective way, we are also launching a more powerful foundation model as well as industry-specific models to tackle domain-specific challenges. Through these initiatives, we hope that our proprietary models can deliver real value to our customers to improve operational efficiency and remain competitive.
The Tongyi Qianwen model is a Chinese competitor to models developed by American giants. Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ: AMZN) and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT).
In particular, approaches to regulating AI in China and the US are very different. China’s approach to AI is vertical with a dual emphasis on promoting AI innovation while ensuring state control over the technology. The country’s focus is on integrity, stability and adherence to a strict framework. China’s AI regulation is primarily addressing two different challenges – AI-powered recommendation algorithms and deep synthesis tools, which are often used to create deepfakes.
Meanwhile, the US lacks a unified AI strategy, adopting a fragmented approach spread across voluntary recommendations and non-binding rules. As such, it is fair to say that China is far ahead of the US in terms of AI regulation, seeing the technology as a tool to advance its economy and leadership.
