Initially, Community Notes was introduced as a fact-checking program to combat disinformation on X. However, this did not work with coverage of the Israel–Hamas conflict.
on Sunday, Elon Musk Announced major changes to monetization policy on the X platform (formerly Twitter). Now, creators of posts corrected by Community Notes will not be entitled to payment. According to Elon Musk, the intention behind the move is to ‘maximize incentives for accuracy over sensationalism’.
Making slight changes to creator monetization:
Any post that has been corrected @communitynotes Became ineligible for revenue share.
Its purpose is to give maximum encouragement to accuracy over sensationalism.

The Community Notes feature aims to create a better-informed world by enabling X users to collaboratively add context to potentially misleading posts. Launched in 2022, the system is based on a wide range of input from contributors for each note that is added to a post within the app. Specifically, contributors can leave notes on any post, and if there are enough contributors from different viewpoints who find the note useful, it will be shown publicly on a post. Post creators are getting paid on the basis of post views.
Initially, Community Notes was introduced as a fact-checking program to combat disinformation on X. However, this did not work with coverage of the Israel–Hamas conflict. Once the war broke out, this tool made the problem of spreading misinformation worse rather than combating fake news.
Social media platforms like X, Meta and TikTok are flooded with posts containing unverified data and misinformation. Within the first few days of the Israel-Hamas war, millions of posts, photos, and videos appeared on the platform, and not all of them were credible. Notably, of all the platforms, Elon Musk’s X suffered the worst outbreak of war-related fake news. As a result, the European Commission formally sent X a request for information under the Digital Services Act (DSA). The latter promotes a safe online environment and protects the fundamental rights of online users.
All of the platforms mentioned also received a warning from Thierry Breton, the European Commissioner for the Internal Market, who reminded them how failure to comply with the region’s rules regarding illegal online posts under the Digital Services Act could affect their businesses.
In response to the warning, X removed hundreds of Hamas-linked accounts from its platform.
Elon Musk is considering new policy: X could charge for using the platform
Community Notes In addition to the monetization update, Elon Musk is reportedly considering charging a monthly fee to use the X platform. Currently, there is an option to subscribe to X Premium which offers special benefits like verification, ability to edit posts, and additional two-factor authentication at $8 per month.
According to Elon Musk, charging all users a small fee to use the platform will help prevent people from creating fake or automated accounts to spread misinformation, propaganda, and scams. The billionaire is considering this idea from 2022. Now, the idea seems real, with Elon Musk already revealing that there will be two new subscription models.
Musk recently Said,
“Two new tiers of X Premium subscriptions will launch soon. One is low cost with all the features but no ads, and the other is more expensive but no ads.”
Earlier, X introduced a $1 annual fee for new users in New Zealand and the Philippines, which Elon Musk says is aimed at combating bots.
