Vienna is the most livable city

“Vienna (Austria) tops the 2023 ranking because of a winning combination of stability, good culture and entertainment, reliable infrastructure and exemplary education and healthcare services. It has regularly held this position over the past several years, with only the city vacating the top spot due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” the EIU report reads.
Melbourne and Sydney make strong comeback in Global City Rankings
In this year’s ranking, the northern European city of Copenhagen took the second spot as the world’s most liveable city, second only to Vienna on the list. The capital of Denmark has retained this position for two years.
The Australian cities of Melbourne and Sydney were not far behind. After experiencing significant declines last year, both cities saw a remarkable rebound, claiming the third and fourth spots on the list. Melbourne and Sydney snatched positions from Western European cities Frankfurt and Amsterdam, who took third and fourth places in 2022.
The report attributed their success to improvements in health services from last year, when the cities were still grappling with the pandemic crisis.
Additionally, three Canadian cities, Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto, ranked 5th, 7th and 9th on the list. Next in the list are two Swiss cities, Zurich and Geneva, which are ranked 6th and 7th respectively.
Last on the list is the Japanese city of Osaka, which took the tenth spot among the world’s most liveable places. These cities emerged as the top ten most liveable cities in the world.
Embracing a renewed sense of vibrancy after the pandemic
The 2023 Liveability Index was measured using various metrics such as sustainability, health care, education, culture, environment and infrastructure. According to the report, the Liveability Index rose to its highest level in 15 years, reflecting the world’s progress beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.
The survey highlighted significant improvements in health care and education scores in many cities across Asia, the Middle East and Africa. However, the report also revealed a drop in the stability score compared to the previous year, attributed to global civil unrest.
Upasana Dutt, Head of Liveability Index at EIU, said the post-pandemic transition towards normalcy has significantly improved the Global Liveability Index for 2023. He said that education among children has emerged strong.
