As Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) ramps up its artificial intelligence (AI) effort, the company is merging its deep learning AI research team Google Brain with DeepMind. Although AI has only recently become very popular, Alphabet has been exploring the industry for some time. The tech giant reportedly bought DeepMind in 2014 for over $500 million. it was after Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) tried to achieve that last year as tech companies focus on deep learning. In addition to Facebook, which hired New York University professor Yann LeCun to lead its new AI lab, Yahoo also found Lookflow, a photo analysis startup, to lead its new deep learning group.
Google Brain and DeepMind are becoming one entity
While Google DeepMind is an AI research lab that operates as a subsidiary of Google, Brain is an internal Google research team. Now, the two forces are coming together to double down on the AI race, competing with rivals like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai Said The new group, Google DeepMind, has been created to “ensure the bold and responsible development of general AI”.
Referring to Google Brain and DeepMind as world-class research teams, the CEO noted his confidence in the potential of the joint ventures to advance the company’s AI vision. He took pride in the collective achievements of the Google Brain team and DeepMind, which include Transformers. Others are WaveNet, AlphaFold and more. Noting that he will lead the unit, DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis where did it go,

According to Hassabis, the combination of Google Brain and DeepMind will help accelerate the technology company’s race into the future. Both should work with faster and stronger collaboration towards building more capable and general AI, he said.
